Starting today, September 21, 2011, Google+ social media network is open to the general public. Started in July Google+ was available just on an invitation basis and aquired 25 million users so far.

Also, starting yesterday, in an open competition with Google+, Facebook introduced more features related to news feeds, friends list and more.

Google+ lets you connect with your friends, group your friends in circles, post messages and articles, connect by video chat and more.

Google Hangout allows you to connect video with your friends. You can find Google apps for iPhone and Android.

Google+ grows every day, using their user’s suggestions and has a great potential to develop in the direct competition with Facebook.

Google+ Friend Circles

Google Plus allows you to group your friends in “Circles”. You can add persons who already have a Gmail account or you can invite persons with a non-Gmail account to sign up to Google+. If you sign up with a non-Gmail account, later on Google suggests you to create a Gmail account, to be able to receive the full benefits of its network.

When someone adds you as a friend on Google+ you will receive a web and/or email notification. In reply, you can add that person to one of your circles or you can leave that person in no circles. The other person will not know if you add it in your circles or not.

In Google+ settings you can find your Gmail contacts. Also you can open up your Yahoo and Hotmail contacts. Google suggests persons you may know, based on your contacts and your extended circle contacts. Every person shows in your contacts with a “business card” like icon.

You can add a person to one or more of your circles, by dragging that person’s business card to that specific circle.

You can create new circles and you can also reorder your circles.

When you post something on Google+ you can select whom you share that post with: one person, a circle, more circles or you can make your post Public.

Google+1 buttons (equivalent of Facebook Likes)

Similar to Facebook “Like” buttons, you can click the Google “+1″ buttons, to show the fact that you like a website or a particular article..

When you click on the “+1″ button you have to be logged in to your Gmail account. If you are not logged in, you will be prompter to login in a new window.

Then you can see a list of your “+1″ likes in your Google profile, in the “+1′s” tab.

This way you can show your interest for your preferred websites and posts, helping these in a better search engine indexing and social integration.

In the 1970’s groundbreaking research was done resulting in a much greater understanding of how the brain functions. The work of a Bulgarian scientist called Georgi Lozanov in the 1960’s laid the foundation for what the West would later call accelerated learning. Various dominant learning modalities were categorized which included audial, visual, and kinesthetic. Although our brains absorb information from all our senses, it was discovered that every individual has a preferred learning modality. Identify it and you can learn must faster.

But now, here is a critical statistic. It was also discovered through many tests that a majority of people like to learn visually. They like to see things as they absorb information. Some studies even put the figure as high as 65% of the population who absorb and recall information best by seeing.

Now can you see where this fits in when we talk of why you should add video to your web site? Pictures can make a huge difference in the way your message comes across. You can state something but when you show a picture of it, well, the effect is immediate.

In the late 1870’s experiments were done with moving pictures. Using 24 cameras, an English photographer by the name of Eadweard Muybridge, photographed a horse in fast motion. The series of photographs settled a debate of the day as to whether all four hooves leave the ground when a horse is running. The resulting ‘movie’ proved conclusively that they do.

From those humble beginnings, motion pictures developed to what they are today. Who can argue that motion pictures have not had an incredibly substantial impact on the 20th and 21st centuries, not only in the arts, but also in technology and politics.

This presents an amazing opportunity for the modern day marketer. Add video to your web site and you capitalize on this highly successful modern medium to get your message across. A large number of people think in pictures. So if you have a video presentation highlighting aspects of your products and services, think of how your sales conversion rates can increase.

Using a tool like Google Analytics, you can measure the average time spent on your web site or on your web page. As an experiment, why not add a video to your web site on one page, and then make a copy of that page without the video. Then do a split test and track the visitor behavior over a period of days or weeks. You may be astonished at the results.

So to boil it all down, why add video to your web site? To make money. Why keep spending out trying to get more traffic when you can increase the sales conversion ratio of the traffic you already receive. Make your web site ’sticky’ by adding video so your visitors will not just click away but engage and actually stay a while. The longer they stay the better for you.
